What goes into building a concrete pool deck?

A concrete pool deck in Saratoga is the flat concrete around your pool. People cross it wet and barefoot, so its finish, its drainage and where the joints go decide how safe it is to walk on and how long it lasts.

Most pool deck calls start with something you can see. It might be a crack that keeps opening, a corner that's dropped, a spot that's slick when wet or too hot to stand on, or water that sits by the house after a swim. The price moves mostly with the deck's size, whether the old concrete comes out first and the finish you pick. The schedule turns on what the city needs before we start and on curing, the days the new concrete needs to harden before anyone walks on it. I'll go through all of it in your yard and write up a figure for your deck.

How we build a concrete pool deck

We settle the finish first and choose it for grip and for how hot it gets in the sun before we ever talk color, because this is a deck people cross wet and barefoot. While we plan, we decide where the water goes. It runs away from the house and toward any deck drains, and not back into the pool. We'll also ask whether your pool is salt or chlorine, since that changes the sealer we recommend. Then our crew digs out and packs the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on. We set the forms and the rebar, steel bars that hold the slab together if it cracks, and we pour early in the day so the top doesn't dry out weak and dusty. We cut control joints, grooves that give the concrete a planned place to crack, while it's still young, and we lay them to follow the deck's curves and drains. If the budget gets tight, the base is the last thing I'd cut. A nice surface on loose dirt settles with the dirt, and a surface can be recoated later.

A pool deck rarely stands alone. If the yard steps down to the pool, we can build concrete steps with the same finish and grip as the deck. If you're adding a pool house or an equipment shed, we pour the slab foundation under it in the same plan so water from both runs the same way.

Planning a concrete pool deck in Saratoga

In most cases the City of Saratoga requires a permit before construction, alteration, repair or demolition work starts. We check early what the city wants for your deck, handle the contractor's side of any permit and help you with the parts that fall to you as the owner. The city allows this work from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, with none on Sundays or weekday holidays, so we set the pour inside those hours. Sometimes a protected tree has its dripline, the outer edge of its canopy, within five feet of the work, and that includes a tree on your neighbor's side. Then the city wants an arborist to review it as part of the permit or design review. A detached single-family home project that creates or replaces 2,500 to 10,000 square feet of hard surface also falls under the city's stormwater worksheet.

We're based in Saratoga and work across it and the cities around it. Many pool decks we're called to are older slabs around older pools, with big trees close by and water that has found its own way toward the house or the pool. We see the same thing on backyard jobs in Los Gatos and Cupertino, so I trace where your water runs now before we plan the new deck.

Why call us for a pool deck

  • The owner writes your estimate

I come out myself to look at your pool area and write the estimate, and our own crew does the work. I'm back on site to check the forms and the pour, the two steps nobody can fix once the concrete sets.

  • Licensed in California, insured too

We're fully licensed and insured. California's contractor licensing board treats forming, pouring and finishing flat concrete as its own trade, so it's worth checking the license of anyone you're comparing.

  • Straight answers since 2021

We've been in business since 2021, and we're known for explaining a job before we start it, as many times as you need. That includes telling you up front that concrete shows some cracking over time, and how we plan the joints for it.

  • Saratoga's rules checked at the visit

When I walk your yard, I look for the trees and the amount of hard surface the city cares about on a deck job. That way you hear about a review before the schedule is set, not after the forms are up.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Saratoga?

The cost comes mainly from the deck's size, any tear-out of old concrete, the finish and the drainage work the yard needs. A plain broom finish costs less than exposed aggregate or a decorative system, and tight curves, extra steps and a hard-to-reach backyard add labor. I'll put your figure in writing after I've seen the yard.

What is the best finish for a pool deck so it isn't slippery?

The best finish is one with real grip that stays bearable in the sun, chosen before the color. Broom, textured, exposed aggregate, coatings, overlays and decorative systems all differ in traction and surface heat, and very dark finishes can get uncomfortable to stand on in the sun. A broom finish, fine ridges dragged across the wet top, is the plain choice when grip comes first.

How often does a concrete pool deck need to be resealed?

One sealer maker's guide says film sealers need recoating every 18 to 24 months, while penetrating sealers last three to five years. The trade-off is the look, because a film sealer brings out the color more and a penetrating one enhances it less. Pick based on how often you're willing to reseal.

Does a salt water pool need a different sealer on the deck?

Usually, yes. The same maker says salt pools spray salt onto the deck and recommends a sealer made to resist chlorides, while a standard chlorine pool typically does fine with an acrylic film sealer. Mention which kind you have when you call.

What causes a concrete pool deck to crack?

Most cracks come from a base that settled or from joints cut late or skipped, which lets the concrete crack wherever it wants. Narrow, irregular panels around curves, drains and corners are also prone to cracking, so ask any contractor how their joints will follow your deck's shape. Some hairline cracking still shows up in most concrete over time, and it's better you hear that now.

Can I resurface my old pool deck instead of replacing it?

Often you can, with a decorative overlay, but only after whatever is making the deck move or settle has been repaired. A new surface on a slab that's still shifting will crack right along with it. I'll look at the old deck at the estimate and tell you plainly which way I'd go.

  • Concrete steps construction

Steps down to the pool or up to the back door take the same wet, barefoot traffic, so building them with the deck keeps the grip and finish consistent.

  • Slab foundation building

Planning a pool house, cabana or equipment shed near the water? A well-packed slab under it, poured with the deck, keeps both draining the same direction.
